We are proud to unveil GRIEF ON PAINTED SHEETS, a collective poetic reaction to the recent Benue massacre in honor of all those who have lost someone dear in the mindless wave of violence that peaked on the 11th of January 2018 with the death of at least seventy-three (73) people in Guma and Logo local government areas of the ‘food basket of the nation’.
The 73 were murdered in their own homes, in the dead of night, and the world woke to gory pictures of mutilated bodies, charred homes, a sea of coffins and grieving souls choking on anger and sadness.
Put simply, ‘Grief on Painted Sheets’ is the reaction of Nigerian poets to the killings. In this collection, words came to life in livid lines and veracious verses and truncated the silent injustice – lyrics became tissues to dab sorrow-laden faces as poetry sought to become lullabies for eyes scared of sleep and dirges on the bedhead of those laid to eternal sleep.
It is somewhat warming that, in the face of human cruelty to fellow humans, so many voices can unify in strong condemnation and to spills words that reaffirm the values of family, love and friendship. This collection of poems restores some hint of hope for humanity – love is not dead! Hurt to a part of the body causes distress for the whole body.
