SILENT DAYS by Tochi Onuoha

Read Time:1 Minute, 12 Second

These days are void
of the peals of laughter ringing out
from the vocal orifices of playing children
the sun embracing their naked,sweaty
anatomies
and the calling voices of their mothers
tearing through the veil of the noon.
.
These days are void
of the chants of the midday hawker
calling out for a buyer
their haggling voices mixing discordantly
with the throes of the dying engine
of a dusty rusty four wheeled vehicle.
.
These days are silent
void of the splattering of raindrops
and the thunderous rumblings
like a god’s fart
that heralds the lightning
slicing through the dark cloak of the sky.
.
These days are encapsulated in silence
bereft of the cacophonous rantings
of drunkards in a bar
drowning their sanity in glassy bottles
of sweet intoxicating liquid
their voices blaring out into the dirty streets.
.
These days are enshrouded in silence
void of the noisy barks of scraggy dogs
who lie in wait in the abattoirs
with impatient jaws and salivating tongues.
for bits of carcass and bones gifted to them.
.
These days are silent
bereft of the melodious chirpings of birds
telling tales of their wondrous sojournings
whilst perched on rooftops and swaying electric
wires
stretched across towering lignified poles.
.
And I am just here,
a man
with only his soul for a companion
held within the quiet walls of Silence
