dear daughter/son, thank your stars
my father’s soles weared
like a locus’d yam
swimming through the choking dust
while he trekked from ikibiri to yenagoa
the prodigal sun lashed at him
more than the state grammar school
teachers did him for arriving late
man and slate appearing like mud moldings
today. i walk on tar to state grammar school
with healthy soles, shoe’d soles
scorched only by the ever brimming sun
with an exercise book

tomorrow. you shall drive early
from ikibiri to the state grammar school
in yenagoa
with a laptop in hand
without a sun-scorched head
cooling through the smooth ride
in a ventilated automobile
down the legendary road
thank your stars
