Introducing The Brigitte Poirson Literature Prize (BPLP): A New Era for Nigerian Literature

Read Time:2 Minute, 56 Second

In a dynamic world where words hold immense power, literature serves as a timeless vessel for sharing stories, emotions, and experiences. Nigeria, with its rich tapestry of culture and language, has been a fertile ground for literary expression. Recognizing the significance of nurturing this literary heritage, Words Rhymes & Rhythm Ltd (WRR) embarked on a remarkable journey in 2015 by establishing the Brigitte Poirson Poetry Contest (BPPC). After 8 years of consistently rewarding poetic excellence and with almost 80 cash prize winners, this literary odyssey has now evolved into something even more profound—The Brigitte Poirson Literature Prize (BPLP).

A Poetic Inception
The BPLP emerges from the remarkable legacy of BPPC, a contest that has been an essential catalyst for the promotion of Nigerian poetry. With its inception in 2015, BPPC set out to create ripples in the world of Nigerian literature. Kukogho Samson, CEO of WRR and the visionary behind the prize recalls the early days of the project.

“We started this project to stimulate the growth of poetry in Nigeria at a time when the focus was largely on fiction, and there were very few credible Nigerian prizes targeting poets. We have achieved this vision.”

A Broader Canvas
The evolution of BPPC into The Brigitte Prize represents a profound transformation. While the contest’s heart remains rooted in poetry, it now opens its arms to embrace the world of short stories. This expansion reflects the dynamic nature of Nigerian literature, acknowledging that storytelling takes diverse forms and shapes.

What does this mean for aspiring poets and storytellers? It means there are now two avenues to shine: through captivating verses and compelling narratives. Winners of The Brigitte Poirson Literature Prize will not only receive cash prizes and chapbook contracts but also have their work published in the annual prize anthology and the CỌ́N-SCÌÒ magazine.

A Remarkable Journey
The Brigitte Prize is named in honor of Brigitte Poirson, a renowned French poet, editor, educationist, and literary advocate who has dedicated her life to supporting African poetry in various capacities. Over the years, the prize has consistently rewarded emerging poets, not only from Nigeria but also from Ghana, the United States, and beyond. It stands as one of the oldest and most consistent poetry initiatives, providing a launchpad for many contemporary Nigerian poets.

BPPC embarked on its journey as a monthly contest, running from February to September, from 2015 to 2019. In 2020, it adapted to a bi-monthly format, continuing its mission to celebrate and elevate Nigerian poets.

The Path Forward
The Brigitte Poirson Literature Prize (BPLP) is more than just a literary contest; it’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Nigerian literature. It symbolizes growth, transformation, and a commitment to supporting emerging voices in the literary world.

As the Prize continues to evolve, it will remain a beacon of hope for poets and storytellers, offering a platform to share their creativity with the world. We invite you to be a part of this exciting journey.
